ONE ELEMENT to unite us all
Purpose: unite the Santa Barbara community around our most common and abundant resource — hydrogen.
Mission: cultivate an event series that becomes the heartbeat and movement builder for the local green hydrogen economy.
Vision: Santa Barbara as the first Green City in America, powered by a green hydrogen micro grid — The Green Dream.
Why Hydrogen?
Hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe, and makes up 63% of the human body. If we truly want to create a world that works for us all, what better way then by creating systems to help communities share our most common resource. It’s not rocket science; it’s basic science.
Why Santa Barbara?
Our community, where Earth Day was born in 1970, is perfectly positioned on the Pacific coast to be a leader in America’s transition to green hydrogen. What we can build locally, we can help scale nationally.
Why Now?
Wildfires, power shut-offs, and excessive demand on the local grid are all reasons for Santa Barbara to create a local micro grid to power and protect us. Add to this, experts predict hydrogen will be a $11 trillion by 2050. As Wayne Gretzky suggests, let’s skate where the puck is going.
Inspiration
When we founded H4H on Earth Day in 2014, we focused our efforts on uniting the community in selfless service. More than 10 years later, we realized the importance of uniting us in science.
After reading our friend and mentor Rinaldo Brutoco’s recent article in Power magazine on the importance of a hydrogen micro grid in Santa Barbara, we knew it was time for a new project to support our community’s efforts to create a resilient, green hydrogen economy.
Project Goals:
(1) Educate the community on the importance, needs and ongoing efforts to create a local clean energy economy
(2) Tell the unfolding story of Santa Barbara’s transition to carbon neutrality by 2035
(3) Hold and spread the vision of The Green Dream: our community united and powered by green hydrogen
(4) Fuel the local clean energy economy by connecting and showcasing leaders, policy makers, entrepreneurs, innovators and educators
5) Help create a green hydrogen micro grid in Santa Barbara

In 2024, community leaders in Santa Barbara created the ambitious goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2035. As noted in their Climate Action Plan, this must be a community-wide effort that creates equity and involves various stakeholders across Santa Barbara.
The Green Dream aims to become a consistent and integral event that brings together stakeholders and leaders to educate the community and stimulate the local clean energy economy. Our goal is to become an indispensable anchor, movement builder, and storyteller for Santa Barbara’s transition to carbon neutrality.
